Hyundai Mobis (012330.KS) has independently developed a 160-kilowatt Power Electric (PE) System that can be universally applied to electric vehicles, the company said Tuesday. The PE System is an integrated component cluster combining the electric motor, inverter and reducer needed to drive an EV, serving the same role as the powertrain in an internal combustion engine vehicle.
The 160kW PE System delivers output equivalent to 215 horsepower by internal combustion engine standards. This level can be applied to most EVs currently in mass production. The PE System can be installed on both the front and rear axles, allowing maximum output to be doubled.
The newly developed system applies modular design technology and standard components, improving specific power — output relative to weight — by about 16 percent while reducing volume by nearly 20 percent. In addition, new cooling technology was applied to improve the motor structure, and power semiconductors with higher energy efficiency were incorporated. Hyundai Mobis said it "developed the PE System as a universal model, but it delivers performance that surpasses our existing products."
Through this development, Hyundai Mobis has secured a drive system lineup covering all EV segments. The company had previously developed a 250kW PE System classified as a high-performance model, and has now expanded its business scope to include a universal model.
The company also plans to develop a 120kW PE System specialized for small electric vehicles within the first half of this year. This model will minimize volume and weight and lower prices compared to existing models, and will be sold mainly in emerging markets.
Hyundai Mobis expects business expansion to accelerate as it secures a range of standard models. Having standard models means there is no need to develop customized drive systems each time a client launches a new vehicle, reducing mass production costs.
Hyundai Mobis said it is proposing the adoption of its PE System to multiple global EV manufacturers, and some companies have shown strong interest. "With the development of this PE System, we have established a drive system lineup covering all EV segments, from small mobility to high-performance vehicles," Hyundai Mobis said. "We will be able to respond to diverse customer demands and target the market with differentiated products."
