Mirae Asset Global Investments announced on the 20th that it will develop a JW Marriott hotel in Gyeongdo, Yeosu, South Jeolla Province—the first global 5-star hotel brand in the Honam region.
Mirae Asset Global Investments held a signing ceremony for a management agreement to build a global 5-star hotel within the Yeosu Gyeongdo development site at JW Marriott Seoul in Banpo on the 19th. The ceremony was attended by Vice Chairman Choi Chang-hoon, Mirae Asset Consulting CEO Chae Chang-sun, and Rajeev Menon, President of Marriott International Asia Pacific (excluding China). Marriott International, which operates JW Marriott, is a global hotel group managing approximately 9,800 hotels across 145 countries and territories, including 39 hotels in South Korea.
This project, pursued in collaboration with a global hotel brand, is a core investment initiative within Mirae Asset Group's ongoing development of the Yeosu Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex. Mirae Asset is investing approximately 1 trillion won to develop a total area of 650,000 pyeong in the Yeosu Gyeongdo area, with completion targeted for 2029. The plan aims to attract domestic and international tourists while contributing to regional economic revitalization and youth job creation.
"This project seeks a qualitative leap in southern coastal tourism infrastructure through the introduction of a global hotel brand," said Choi Chang-hoon, Vice Chairman of Mirae Asset Global Investments. "We will complete this as a landmark mixed-use development project that goes beyond simple hotel development to contribute to regional economic revitalization and long-term enhancement of tourism asset value."
Specialized partners with experience in global hotel projects are participating in design and architecture. Nikken Sekkei, the global architecture firm that designed One Za'abeel in Dubai, is handling the architectural design. Su Sheim Teo, which has executed numerous global luxury hotel projects including Four Seasons Hotel Seoul and The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, is responsible for interior design.
The hotel will comprise 261 rooms and feature core infrastructure required for global luxury hotels, including upscale restaurants and bars, convention and banquet facilities, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a spa. The property will be developed as a mixed-use hotel serving both leisure demand and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) demand for corporate events and international gatherings.
Additionally, the 27-hole Sagewood Yeosu Golf Course is located near the hotel, enabling differentiation as a luxury resort-style hotel targeting domestic and international golf demand. The company explained it will introduce a hybrid hotel model combining golf and leisure based on the region's mild climate and coastal scenery.
