Cheon Jun-ho, senior deputy floor leader of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, warned on Monday that attempts to spread conspiracy theories regarding the so-called "charge dismissal deal" involving President Lee Jae-myung would not be tolerated.
"The dismissal of charges stemming from prosecutorial fabrication cannot be subject to any deal," Cheon said at a policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly. "The prosecution itself says it has received no such message. These conspiracy theories are preposterous."
He criticized the allegations as "an act that goes beyond shaking the president to undermining prosecutorial reform."
"Who benefits from raising such suspicions?" Cheon asked. "The politicized prosecution that used prosecutors' offices like corporate executive suites will be celebrating."
Cheon also lashed out at the opposition People Power Party, which has been pressing the issue through calls for a special counsel investigation.
"Stop your base attacks and stop trying to jump on the bandwagon at every opportunity," he said. "Have you learned nothing after inciting an insurrection based on conspiracy theories?"
Regarding the National Assembly plenary session scheduled for the day, Cheon noted that agreements had been reached for joint processing of bills "despite the unstable situation caused by the People Power Party's off-floor protests."
He said the session would address legislation including amendments to the Telecommunications Business Act aimed at responding to large-scale data breaches and preventing voice phishing scams.
