"Why do I feel especially drowsy after lunch every spring?"
Many people complain of lethargy and sleepiness after lunch during spring, commonly known as "spring fatigue." However, medical experts advise that prolonged fatigue affecting daily life may indicate chronic fatigue syndrome rather than seasonal tiredness.
According to the medical community on the 6th, spring fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome appear similar but differ in causes and treatment approaches. Spring fatigue is a physiological response to seasonal changes. As winter transitions to spring, longer daylight hours and rising temperatures trigger changes in body temperature regulation, the nervous system, and hormonal balance, causing temporary fatigue.
Increased activity levels after a relatively sedentary winter also contribute. Most cases resolve naturally within weeks through adequate sleep, balanced meals, and light exercise. However, lack of exercise or overwork can intensify symptoms.
Fatigue persisting beyond three weeks or unrelieved by rest may signal something more serious. Adults in their 40s and 50s experiencing persistent fatigue, weight loss exceeding 10% within six months, or fever should seek medical evaluation.
Men over 40 should be particularly cautious, as liver disease, diabetes, and cancer can initially manifest as fatigue alone. Women may mistake anemia or thyroid disorders for spring fatigue, while those over 50 may be experiencing menopausal symptoms.
Chronic fatigue syndrome differs from seasonal tiredness. It typically involves severe fatigue lasting six months or longer that does not improve with sleep. Symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, memory problems, headaches, and joint pain.
The exact cause remains unclear, but immune system abnormalities, viral infections, stress, and hormonal imbalances are believed to play combined roles.
Duration and recovery are key factors distinguishing spring fatigue from chronic fatigue. Spring fatigue appears seasonally and typically improves within weeks, while chronic fatigue persists regardless of season and significantly impairs daily functioning.
"Chronic fatigue can be related to depression, sleep disorders, and other medical conditions, so accurate diagnosis is necessary," said Yeom Geun-sang, professor of family medicine at Catholic University of Korea Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital. "It's important to rule out other diseases through blood tests, thyroid function tests, liver function tests, and sleep assessments."
When no specific condition is identified, patients may be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Treatment focuses on symptom management and quality of life improvement rather than eliminating causes. Regular lifestyle habits, adequate sleep, stress management, and appropriate exercise are fundamental management approaches.
Lifestyle management is equally important. "Getting 15 to 30 minutes of morning sunlight after waking regulates melatonin secretion, helping you fall asleep more easily at night," said Jang Jun-hee, director of internal medicine at Seran Hospital. "Excessive napping doesn't help fatigue recovery and should be limited to 30 minutes."
"Maintaining consistent sleep schedules stabilizes circadian rhythms better than sleeping in on weekends," Jang added. "Adequate nutrition is essential for overcoming spring fatigue. Eating foods rich in vitamin B such as brown rice, whole wheat, and barley, along with aerobic exercise, is recommended."
