The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 6th that it will take strict action against crimes including the distribution of false information using artificial intelligence, ahead of the 9th nationwide local elections.
The office held a meeting with relevant agencies, attended by 15 officials from the prosecutors' office, local election commissions, and police.
Participants agreed to respond swiftly to crimes including the spread of false information and smear campaigns using generative AI technology, bribery, and illegal election interference by public officials and organizations.
The Eastern District Prosecutors' Office is maintaining an emergency response system, including the formation of a dedicated election investigation unit.
"The prosecution, election commissions, and police will actively cooperate to conduct strict investigations according to law and principle, and do our best to establish a culture of fair elections by ensuring sentences commensurate with illegal acts are handed down," a prosecution official said.
