Thousands of Iraqi Kurdish fighters have launched a ground attack on Iran, Fox News reported on Sunday, citing U.S. officials.
Earlier that day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed at a regular briefing that "President Donald Trump has been in contact with Kurdish leaders following the airstrikes on Iran." She denied, however, that the contact was aimed at supporting the Kurds to overthrow the Iranian regime.
The Associated Press reported, citing Kurdish sources, that "the United States requested support from the Kurds." The Kurds are considered the most organized among Iranian rebel forces and are estimated to have thousands of trained fighters. The AP noted that "their participation in the war would not only pose a significant threat to the Iranian government but also risk drawing Iraq deeper into the conflict."
Meanwhile, Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency reported, citing an Iranian military official, that "Iran would attack Israel's Dimona nuclear facility if the United States and Israel attempt to overthrow the regime."
