Adobe Integrates AI into Premiere, Transforming Video Editing

Adobe is adding artificial intelligence-based features to its video editing software Premiere and motion design software After Effects. The company has partnered with video generation AI startup Runway to provide next-generation AI video models.

The move is analyzed as a strategy to strengthen competitiveness as video production software, expand its user base, and minimize existing user attrition. Competition in the video content production market is intensifying as video generation AI tools such as Google's Veo and OpenAI's Sora advance to levels capable of handling everything from content creation to editing. Existing software including CapCut, the video editing app from TikTok parent company ByteDance, is also integrating extensive AI features.

Adobe has added an AI-powered masking feature to Premiere that automatically selects specific areas within video footage to apply effects. This reduces the burden of rotoscoping work, which traditionally requires manually tracing moving subjects frame by frame. The software also supports elliptical, rectangular, and pen-based shape masks to enhance precision in post-production editing.

Users can instantly import assets generated through Firefly Board during the idea sketching phase directly into the Premiere editing environment. In this process, users can explore concepts utilizing not only Adobe's own models but also AI models from Google, OpenAI, and Runway. This streamlines the workflow from ideation to editing, making it faster and more efficient.

Adobe Stock Panel has also been integrated into Premiere. Users can now search, preview, and purchase licenses for more than 52 million video clips without leaving the application.

Adobe has also enhanced Firefly's prompt-based editing and camera motion control features. The company unveiled a public beta of Firefly Video Editor, which enables users to create content directly in a browser by combining generative video, graphics, and audio.

After Effects has received a new "Native 3D Parametric Mesh" feature. This function supports more detailed control over 3D object design and lighting expression. Additionally, Adobe is providing over 1,300 free Substance 3D material assets, and the variable font animation feature expands control over title and text animations.

"The creative community inspires everything Adobe does," said Deepa Subramaniam, Vice President of Product Marketing for Creative Professionals at Adobe. "Adobe is committed to advancing AI video tools through new innovations and investments for the next generation of storytellers."

Adobe has been regarded as a dominant player in the video editing market. In fact, 85% of this year's submissions to Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States, utilized Adobe applications including Premiere, Frame.io, After Effects, Photoshop, and the Substance 3D Collection.

However, competition is intensifying as generative AI technology advances. Video generation AI tools such as Google's Veo 3 and OpenAI's Sora are rapidly evolving toward automating the entire content creation and editing process. CapCut, linked to short-form platform TikTok, continues to add AI features as well.
