Yeoncheon County in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 3 that it has opened the "EBS Self-Directed Learning Center" and begun full operations. The facility was selected through a Ministry of Education competition and designated as one of 50 centers nationwide. It is jointly operated by the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), Yeoncheon County, and the Gyeonggi Province Yeoncheon Office of Education.
The center occupies 158.5 square meters on the first floor of the Yeoncheon Unification Lifelong Education Center. It features two individual study rooms, one lecture room, one coordinator's office, and one lounge. The facility serves 30 students from first-year middle school through third-year high school in the region.
An artificial intelligence-based learning diagnostic system analyzes each student's academic level and provides customized content and study plans. A resident learning coordinator manages attendance, weekly study progress, career counseling, and EBS textbook support.
Approximately 40 parents and students attended a preliminary briefing session in December last year. The first enrollment period drew 59 applicants—roughly double the capacity—reflecting strong interest.
"This will serve as an opportunity to expand public educational infrastructure in the region and narrow the education gap," a Yeoncheon County official said.
