Google has submitted additional documents related to the export of high-precision maps as requested by the Korean government.
According to the government on Monday, Google submitted security documents related to its request to export high-precision maps to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport at around 11 p.m. Sunday. The ministry had previously ordered Google to supplement its documentation regarding the high-precision map export request in November last year. Sunday was the deadline for document supplementation set by the government for Google.
The government plans to review the additional documents submitted by Google and then convene the consultative body on overseas export of surveying data to discuss whether to approve the map export. As a result, the final decision is expected to take several months.
The 1:5,000 scale maps that Google requested to export represent 50 meters of actual distance as 1 centimeter on the map. Google first requested map export in February last year, but the government consultative body has twice deferred its decision, in May and August of the same year. The government's position is that Google must meet requirements including obscuring domestic security facilities, restricting coordinate exposure, and establishing a domestic data center in order to export the maps.
