Nvidia is lowering the barrier to entry by enabling competitors' artificial intelligence (AI) chips to run on its platform.
The company unveiled a new server rack called "MGX ETL" at its annual technology conference GTC 2026 last week, according to a report by The Information on Monday.
The MGX ETL is designed to run not only Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) but also chips from competitors such as AMD. Chips made by Chinese companies can be installed and operated using Nvidia software. This means advanced AI development is possible without Nvidia GPUs, even as the United States has blocked AI chip exports to China.
The move is seen as a response to a growing number of developers adopting custom AI chips (ASICs) such as Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) instead of expensive GPUs. There had been widespread complaints in the industry that Nvidia designed its networking equipment to work only with its own GPUs, increasing the purchasing burden on customers.
