CJ Group will open its proprietary verified database free of charge to help expand South Korea's open-source ecosystem.
CJ Group announced on the 13th that it has joined as a new member of the OSORI (Open Source DB Integration) open-source project, which includes the Korea Copyright Commission and eight major domestic corporations including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Kakao, Naver, and four Hyundai Motor Group affiliates. This marks the first time a non-IT company has established its own open-source management system (governance) and contributed the results to society.
The OSORI open-source project is a mutual growth platform that integrates and verifies open-source software information previously managed separately by large corporations, making it freely available for anyone to use easily. While many companies use publicly available open-source software to reduce costs and time required for new technology development, issues such as security vulnerabilities and license violations can arise. The project provides approximately 60,000 software license records to help small and medium-sized enterprises and individual developers with weak risk management capabilities utilize open-source software more safely and strategically.
CJ Group emphasized that its affiliates have recently received recognition for systematic management capabilities by obtaining international standard certifications related to open-source in succession. CJ CGV and CJ Logistics each became the first in South Korea's entertainment and logistics industries, respectively, to obtain international standard certifications related to open-source last year. CJ Olive Young also received the same certification earlier this month, becoming the first in South Korea's beauty and health industry.
Yang Jong-yoon, Head of the Compliance Support Group overseeing CJ Group's open-source initiatives, said, "The importance of open-source is growing daily amid the advancement of global K-culture platforms and the transition to artificial intelligence (AI)," adding, "We will further strengthen our license management system and take the lead in expanding the open-source ecosystem and promoting mutual growth."
