Estimated payment transactions at convenience stores approached 20 trillion won over the past six months, surpassing hypermarkets among offline retail channels. GS25, a convenience store chain, ranked first among individual brands, beating hypermarket giant E-Mart.
According to data released Monday by WiseApp·Retail, a retail analytics service, convenience stores recorded the highest estimated payment volume at 19.9 trillion won from September last year through February this year. The figure was nearly 6 trillion won more than hypermarkets, which posted 14 trillion won.
Supermarkets followed with 9.9 trillion won, warehouse-style stores with 7.3 trillion won, and corporate supermarkets with 2.9 trillion won. Estimated payment volumes at convenience stores, supermarkets, and warehouse-style stores rose for the second consecutive year on a same-period basis. Driven by the growth of convenience stores, GS25 overtook E-Mart to claim the top spot among individual brands in estimated payments.
CU, another convenience store brand, ranked third, followed by mart chains including Nonghyup Hanaro Mart, Costco, and Homeplus. They were followed by Seven Eleven, Lotte Mart, E-Mart Traders, E-Mart 24, Top Mart, GS The Fresh, E-Mart Everyday, No Brand, and Homeplus Express.
Costco recorded the highest average estimated payment per customer at 349,000 won. Warehouse-style store E-Mart Traders, E-Mart, and Jangbogo Food Mart followed in that order. The average payment per customer at E-Mart Traders and E-Mart stood at 155,000 won and 154,000 won respectively, less than half of top-ranked Costco.
WiseApp·Retail noted that the estimated payment figures do not include transactions made via bank transfers, cash, or gift certificates, and therefore differ from each company's actual revenue.
