KF-21 launches! Korea's defense industry now conquers the skies!
The rollout ceremony for the first mass-produced KF-21 fighter jet held in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, on the 25th was unusually crowded with foreign dignitaries. Ambassadors, diplomats, and military attaché delegations from numerous countries attended in force, turning the venue into what resembled a small defense exhibition.
Ambassadors to South Korea from the United Kingdom, Peru, Japan, Indonesia, and Canada were present, along with diplomats from major countries including the United States, Australia, and Iraq. Military attaché teams from Egypt, Thailand, Poland, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia also joined, filling the venue with military officials from around the world. The scene underscored the intense international interest surrounding the KF-21.
Some foreign military attachés used binoculars to closely observe the KF-21 as it flew over Sacheon's skies. Observers noted that the event appeared to go beyond a simple commemorative ceremony, carrying the character of a field inspection with actual acquisition possibilities in mind.
President Lee Jae-myung's decision to personally tour the production facility immediately after the ceremony was also interpreted as a diplomatic message. Analysts described the move as a form of on-site "investor relations (IR) presentation" aimed at the diplomatic delegations. A Presidential Office official explained, "Showing the annual production capacity, manufacturing processes, and automated production lines after the rollout ceremony was intended to showcase not only the KF-21 but Korea's overall defense industry capabilities."
In practice, a significant number of the diplomatic delegates were seen closely examining the aircraft's performance and flight stability. Interest was detected not only from Indonesia, which is in the midst of export negotiations, but also from the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is frequently cited as a leading candidate for KF-21 adoption, and it has been suggested that the fighter may have been included in the large-scale defense cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last year. Saudi Arabia is also known to have been reviewing acquisition of the KF-21 alongside the long-range surface-to-air missile system L-SAM.
The attention the KF-21 is drawing stems from its combination of performance, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. Although classified as a 4.5th-generation fighter, its key strength is its nature as an "evolutionary platform" capable of advancing to 5th-generation and beyond with enhanced stealth capabilities. Its top speed of Mach 1.81 and weapons payload capacity of approximately 7.7 tons are considered competitive in terms of compatibility with the latest weapons systems currently in operation.
