Red plum blossoms, cherry blossoms and tulips — spring has arrived in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, filling the city with pastel-pink romance and excitement as winter recedes.
Suncheon, a city for leisurely walks, lingering in gardens and slow travel, is at its best in March and April. Flowers bloom under the spring sun and warm breezes welcome visitors, making it the ideal time to explore the city.
The Suncheon city government plans to offer travelers special spring content combining flowers, nature and sensibility across the entire city, including the Suncheon Bay National Garden, the Dongcheon cherry blossom trail, Naganeupseong Folk Village and the drama filming set.
Red Plum Blossoms Signal the Start
Suncheon's spring stretches into life in early March with the red plum blossoms of Tammae Village.
The village boasts the earliest blooms in the country, serving as the first signal of spring in Suncheon. A walking trail connecting the nearby Maesandeung modern cultural heritage street offers a tranquil spring landscape where time seems to stand still.
Dongcheon Cherry Blossom Trail
The Dongcheon cherry blossom trail in the city center is Suncheon's signature spring destination.
Dongcheon is the space closest to the daily lives of Suncheon residents, much like the Han River is to Seoul. When spring arrives, the area transforms into something extraordinary.
Under cherry blossoms cascading along the riverbank, residents and tourists alike enjoy strolls and picnics at their own pace, savoring the spring atmosphere. Petals drifting in the wind blend with the gentle ripples of Dongcheon, making it the most intimate and beautiful place to experience spring in everyday life.
After the cherry blossoms fall, the double-layered cherry blossoms of Seonamsa Temple crown the season's grand finale.
Suncheon Bay National Garden: The Spring Hub
Suncheon Bay National Garden, designated as Korea's first national garden, is the core tourism hub in spring.
Various spring flowers including tulips bloom across the garden at different times, creating seasonal landscapes throughout.
The tens of thousands of tulips clustered in the Sunset Garden and the Netherlands Garden in particular produce a spectacular scene resembling an artist's palette spread open.
To welcome spring, the garden will run "Garden Meong," an active relaxation program from March 28 to 29 where visitors sit on green lawns to enjoy knitting, reading and hand-copying texts while viewing flowers. The program showcases a unique garden culture where 100 participants experience an overwhelming sense of calm.
In April, when spring flowers reach their most brilliant peak, the garden is preparing travel content including the "National Garden Tulip Festival" and "Garden Spring Flower Picnic," offering visitors a chance to rest among the blossoms.
Festivals Bloom Across the City
Various spring flower festivals are held throughout Suncheon, marking the changing seasons.
In early April, a cherry blossom festival connecting Jogok-dong, Seomyeon and the Yongdang embankment trail kicks things off. From April 25 to 26, a lantern festival at Jorye Lake Park will illuminate spring nights with softly glowing lanterns, creating beautiful evening scenery.
The festivities continue from the late-April Godongsan Azalea Festival in Songgwang-myeon to the Rose Festival in Pungdeok-dong in May.
From red plum blossoms to roses, Suncheon's spring unfolds as a season when the entire city becomes one enormous garden.
Tea Tours and Retro Travel
Throughout April, a "Spring Tea Rising" guided tour will operate along the forest trails of Seonamsa Temple. The program is a premium healing experience featuring wild tea blending and a traditional tea ceremony set against the backdrop of Seonamsa's double cherry blossoms.
A unique "retro travel" experience also draws attention. The Suncheon drama filming set offers old-style school uniform experiences and nostalgic street food, while the yellow canola flower fields near the House of Promises create a cinematic spring landscape.
Naganeupseong, a fortress village preserving 600 years of Joseon Dynasty history, is another signature experience destination.
Plum blossoms, cornelian cherry flowers and cherry blossoms bloom one after another between thatched-roof cottage walls, spreading across the village like a watercolor painting. Visitors can enjoy honorary village guard experiences and traditional Korean music performances, time-slipping into the tranquil spring days of the Joseon era for an unforgettable experience.
