SpaceX's Starlink Hits 10,000 Active Satellites, Eyes Role in Iran Crisis

Elon Musk's space venture SpaceX has set another major milestone in human space exploration history. The number of active Starlink satellites orbiting in low Earth orbit has finally surpassed 10,000 units. Experts say this marks the moment satellite internet has become part of daily life. This achievement goes beyond a mere numerical record, suggesting that Musk's promised vision of "high-speed internet available anywhere on Earth" and his dream of "Mars settlement" are now firmly on track.

'10,000 Eyes' Now Wrap the Earth

On the 17th (local time), a Falcon 9 rocket roared skyward from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. With the Starlink satellites from this launch settling into orbit, the total number of operational Starlink satellites has grown to 10,049.

This achievement comes just seven years after the first test launch in 2019. According to satellite tracking expert Jonathan McDowell, approximately 65% of all active satellites currently orbiting Earth bear the SpaceX logo. It's no exaggeration to say the night sky's dominant presence is shifting from celestial bodies to Musk's "artificial stars."

The recent milestone was driven by Starlink V2 Mini satellites. These satellites offer four times the communication capacity of previous models and are being launched an average of two to three times per week, thanks to SpaceX's reusable rocket technology.

SpaceX's ambitions don't stop here. Musk plans to build a massive satellite constellation of up to 40,000 units, far exceeding the initial target of 10,000. Analysts predict satellite deployment will accelerate further once the next-generation Starship rocket enters full operation.

Iran Government Launches 'Massive Crackdown'

Ironically, the global communications network covered by 10,000 satellites does not reach all regions equally. As Starlink's technological prowess grows, authoritarian regimes viewing it as a threat to their control have intensified their crackdowns. Iran, currently engaged in wartime conditions, stands as a prime example.

Reports indicate Iran is using the war situation as a pretext to strengthen internal controls and block popular uprisings. Citizens are being warned not to post about the war online or protest in the streets.

Iranian intelligence agencies have seized hundreds of Starlink terminals nationwide. With the internet cut off due to the war, Starlink serves as a means to bypass government censorship and access the internet. The Iranian government has declared Starlink use illegal.

In January this year, anti-government protesters in Iran used Starlink to broadcast their activities abroad despite government internet shutdowns. At the time, Musk offered Starlink to Iran for free. While an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Starlink subscribers were once believed to exist in Iran, observers suggest most have been deactivated due to the government's massive crackdown.

Starlink emerged as a critical emergency communication tool during the Russia-Ukraine war. With concerns mounting that the Iran conflict could become prolonged, attention is now focused on what impact Starlink may have on the Iranian situation.
