Gangnam District will hold a public briefing on major development projects in the Samseong-dong area at the Daechi 2-dong Complex Cultural Center on May 25.
According to Gangnam District, several projects are currently underway in the Samseong-dong area: the Hyundai Motor Global Business Center (GBC) construction, the Yeongdong-daero underground complex development, the COEX site development, and the Jamsil Sports-MICE complex project. These initiatives are considered long-term projects that will reshape Gangnam's urban structure, living zones, and foundation for future growth.
At the briefing, the district will explain each project's overview, progress, and future schedule, as well as the interconnections between projects and expected benefits. Officials also plan to gather residents' concerns about construction-related issues such as noise, dust, and traffic disruptions, and explore countermeasures.
The Hyundai Motor GBC project aims to build a mixed-use complex featuring advanced office facilities, a hotel, exhibition halls, and performance venues on the former KEPCO headquarters site. The plan was revised from the original 105-story building to three 49-story towers, with completion targeted for the end of 2031. Public spaces including an urban forest and observation deck are also planned.
The Yeongdong-daero underground complex development will establish an integrated transfer center connecting five rail lines, including GTX-A, GTX-C, and the Wirye-Sinsa Line, in the underground space between Samseong Station and Bongeunsa Station. Non-stop passage through Samseong Station will begin in June when the full GTX-A line opens, with the entire project targeted for completion in 2028.
The COEX site development plans to introduce prime office space and cultural arts exhibition facilities on the City Airport Terminal site, with city airport services resuming in 2029. The project will also create a pedestrian and green corridor connecting the Yeongdong-daero surface plaza to Seonjeongneung.
The Jamsil Sports-MICE complex project is a key component of the International Exchange Complex District plan linking COEX and Jamsil Sports Complex. Targeted for completion in 2032, the project will create an advanced sports and cultural landmark featuring exhibition and convention facilities 2.5 times the size of COEX, Korea's largest domed baseball stadium, and office and accommodation facilities.
Gangnam District Mayor Cho Seong-myeong said, "The major development projects in the Samseong-dong area represent a critical turning point in redesigning Gangnam's next 100 years." He added, "We will explain the direction and details of these changes to residents and work to create a future city of Gangnam that everyone can embrace."
