The final round of the Players Championship—often called "the fifth major"—witnessed the longest drive ever recorded on TPC Sawgrass's 18th hole (par 4). Champion Cameron Young (USA) crushed a 375-yard drive he later described as "the shot of my life."
Drive distances on the PGA Tour have been steadily increasing. The 300-yard mark, once the benchmark for long hitters, has become a label for short hitters.
John Daly, the legendary long driver, was the first to average over 300 yards on the PGA Tour. Daly averaged 302.0 yards in 1997 and remained the only player to exceed 300 yards until 2002. After Daly broke the barrier, 300 yards became the standard for being called a "long hitter."

Before Daly, 300 yards was a "dream distance." The growth in the number of 300-yard hitters illustrates the evolution of driving distance. The PGA Tour's "300-yard club" grew from 26 players in 2016 to 50 in 2018, finally surpassing 100 in 2024. That year, Max Homa, Webb Simpson, and Justin Suh (all USA) averaged 300.2 yards, tied for 100th in driving distance. In 27 years since Daly first broke 300 yards in 1997, the number grew from one to over 100.
The tour-wide average driving distance also exceeded 300 yards for the first time in 2024, rising from 299.9 yards in 2023 to 300.2 yards. As more players surpassed the mark, 300 yards shifted from "long-hitting benchmark" to "middle of the pack" to its current status as "the ceiling for short hitters."
Last year, 116 players averaged over 300 yards—65% of the 180 ranked players. The tour average rose to 302.8 yards. Brian Campbell (USA) ranked last at 278.4 yards.

In 1997, when Daly first exceeded 300 yards, the tour average was 267.3 yards. That year, 278.4 yards ranked 17th, achieved by Stuart Appleby (Australia).
This year, 106 players average over 300 yards, slightly fewer than last year. Gary Woodland (USA) leads at 326.2 yards. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) ranks 9th at 315.5 yards, while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (USA) sits 39th at 309.9 yards.
Most Korean players in the rankings also exceed 300 yards: Lee Seung-taek ranks 36th (310.1 yards), Kim Sung-hyun 78th (303.7 yards), and Kim Joo-hyung 100th (300.9 yards).

The only Korean player below 300 yards is Kim Si-woo, ranked 122nd at 298.6 yards. Yet Kim ranks 10th in scoring average (70.14 strokes) and 15th in prize money ($2,309,038)—a remarkable achievement that defies the era of power golf.
