The United States faces mounting pressure as its conflict with Iran evolves into an asymmetric war of attrition, forcing expensive interceptor missiles against cheap kamikaze drones.
Iran's low-cost offensive is rapidly depleting weapon stockpiles of the US and its Gulf allies while straining their air defense systems. Bloomberg projected that in a prolonged war of attrition, the side that endures longer will gain the upper hand.
Iranian suicide drones cost just $20,000 each, while US-made Patriot interceptor missiles run $4 million per unit—more than 200 times the cost to neutralize a single drone. "Iran's missile and drone stockpiles will eventually diminish, but as long as the regime survives, it can sustain a prolonged war of attrition," said Ankit Panda, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Facing growing criticism over the asymmetric cost disparity, the US has turned to Ukraine, which accumulated drone warfare expertise fighting Russia. The Financial Times reported that the Pentagon is in discussions to purchase Ukrainian drone interception systems, specifically the low-cost "Sting" interceptor drone.
In November 2023, Defense Blog reported that Ukraine destroyed Russian jet-powered Shahed drones mid-air using domestically developed Sting interceptors, proving the system's effectiveness against high-speed drone attacks in combat. The jet-propelled Shahed-238, designated Geran-3 by Russia, is an upgraded variant of the Shahed-136 that Iran deployed in the current conflict.
Iran's Shahed-136
Iran's primary drone is the stingray-shaped Shahed-136, a long-range suicide UAV first unveiled in late 2021. It carries a 30-kilogram warhead and can fly up to 2,500 kilometers before self-detonating at a maximum speed of 180 kilometers per hour. Operating at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters, it proves extremely difficult to hit with portable anti-aircraft missiles or small arms until descending near its target.

The medium-sized drone weighs approximately 200 kilograms with a 2.5-meter wingspan. Its warhead capacity ranges from 30 to 50 kilograms, with an operational range of 1,800 to 2,500 kilometers—comparable to cruise missiles. At roughly $20,000 per unit, it ranks among the cheapest long-range munitions available. Iran reportedly possesses 4,000 to 6,000 units and can produce dozens daily.
Ukraine's Sting Interceptor
Ukraine's Sting interceptor drone pursues enemy drones using first-person view (FPV) technology, reaching maximum speeds of 315 kilometers per hour to chase down and destroy suicide drones. Operators control the drone via virtual reality goggles, using onboard explosives to collide directly with targets. The system incorporates thermal imaging and infrared cameras, operates at altitudes up to 3,000 meters, and achieves a reported 90% success rate through its AI-based automatic guidance system.
Each unit costs approximately $2,000—one-tenth the price of Shahed-series drones.
Tactical Comparison
The Shahed-136 cannot be piloted in real-time like hobby FPV drones. Without access to satellite internet networks like America's Starlink, Iran loses video transmission capability beyond approximately 100 kilometers from the operator.
The Sting's advantage lies in providing low-cost air defense against multiple low-altitude attack drones that conventional anti-aircraft guns and missile systems struggle to counter. This enables a "drone-versus-drone" defense architecture based on low cost and high mobility.
