President Lee Jae-myung held a summit with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday and adopted documents to strengthen cooperation in climate change, maritime safety, and digital sectors.
The two governments signed three memorandums of understanding (MOUs) at the Blue House covering climate change cooperation, maritime security cooperation, and technology-digital-innovation development cooperation.
Under the "Climate Change Cooperation Agreement," both nations agreed to cooperate on climate change response activities and related technology development, and to establish a joint committee for this purpose. A foundation was also laid to pursue international trading of greenhouse gas reduction credits through voluntary cooperation between countries utilizing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Through this framework, both countries plan to strengthen cooperation to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.
An MOU on "Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation" was also signed between the Korea Coast Guard and the Ghana Navy. The agreement includes personnel exchanges through training, education, and seminars, as well as cooperation on information sharing regarding international maritime crimes such as piracy and weapons and drug trafficking, and search and rescue operations for distressed persons, vessels, and aircraft. The Blue House stated this will enhance safety in the Gulf of Guinea waters off Africa while preventing accidents involving Korean nationals and vessels and improving crisis response capabilities.
Additionally, both countries signed an MOU on development cooperation in technology, digital, and innovation sectors. The MOU, a cooperation document between Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana's Ministry of Finance, includes initiatives to support vocational skills training, strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education, creating technology-based employment and startup ecosystems, and improving artificial intelligence (AI) and digital accessibility.
Through these agreements, both nations aim to expand cooperation in future industry sectors including AI and digital education and vocational training for young talent.
