Seongnam City announced on the 11th that it will distribute "Portable SOS Seongnam Bells" to all elementary school students in the region this year.
The Seongnam Bell emits a warning sound of over 120 decibels when a button is pressed or a ring is pulled in emergency situations, allowing users to call for help from those nearby.
The device is a keychain-type terminal (6 cm wide, 5.5 cm tall) that can be attached to bags. Considering it will be carried daily, the device features a silicone case for enhanced durability.
The design incorporates Seongnam City's mascot character, Seongnami.
Distribution targets include students in grades 1 through 6 at all 72 elementary schools and students in elementary courses at six alternative education institutions.
Applications are being accepted from March 4 to 13 through Naver Forms on a school or institution basis. Applicants need to enter the number of students, delivery address, and contact person information.
Based on the applications received, the city will begin sequential distribution through schools and institutions starting late March.
A Seongnam City official said, "We introduced the Seongnam Bell to alleviate parents' concerns about crimes targeting children and safety accidents on the way to and from school," adding, "We expect it will serve as a safety device in children's daily lives."
