Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Jin Young-seung visited multiple military commands on Monday to inspect the Freedom Shield (FS) exercise, a joint South Korea-U.S. drill designed to prepare for contingencies on the Korean Peninsula.
Jin toured the Combined Marine Component Command, Northwest Islands Defense Command, and Navy 2nd Fleet Command, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
At the Combined Marine Component Command and Northwest Islands Defense Command, Jin urged South Korean and U.S. troops to work as one to verify wartime operational plans and strengthen practical combined operational systems through the exercise, which is being conducted ahead of the transition of wartime operational control.
During his visit to the Navy 2nd Fleet Command, Jin said, "For the combined South Korea-U.S. naval forces to successfully complete their wartime missions, we must verify interoperability and combined operational systems through practical training."
He added, "This combined exercise is an opportunity for South Korean and U.S. troops to become a true 'one team' and demonstrate the execution capability of our combined defense foundation."
