Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is expanding user convenience by applying a new camera standard to its smart home platform SmartThings. With the new standard, users will be able to view the interior of their homes and entryways through Samsung SmartThings as if they had installed closed-circuit television (CCTV), with remote control capabilities.
Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday that its smart home platform SmartThings will be the first in the industry to adopt the Matter 1.5-based camera standard. Matter is a global smart home connectivity standard established by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), a private standards body, to expand interoperability between devices.
Through this camera standard adoption, SmartThings adds cameras to its existing Matter-based lineup of lighting, door locks, switches and various sensors. The platform now supports the widest range of Matter devices among smart home platforms.
Integrating cameras with SmartThings enables users to build safer and more convenient smart homes. For example, users can monitor conditions inside and around their homes while away and check on pets to take appropriate measures remotely.
Samsung Electronics will begin rolling out updates applying Matter 1.5, announced by the CSA in November, to SmartThings starting from late December.
The Matter 1.5 camera standard supports cameras for various uses including indoor and outdoor security and video doorbells. It includes a wide range of convenience features such as live video playback, two-way communication, motion detection alerts, event video storage, and pan-tilt-zoom control.
With this update, camera manufacturers can easily launch SmartThings-compatible cameras based on Matter's software development kit (SDK) without needing to adapt to separate application programming interfaces (APIs).
Users will also have a wider selection of SmartThings-compatible cameras. Samsung Electronics is collaborating with Aqara, Eve and Ulticam to develop Matter standard-based cameras. These cameras are expected to launch sequentially around March next year.
"SmartThings connects products and services from various brands and protocols into one, providing customers with a consistent and integrated experience," said Jae-yeon Jeong, Executive Vice President of the AI Platform Center at Samsung Electronics. "We will continue to expand collaboration on industry standards including Matter to drive this customer experience innovation."
SmartThings is strengthening partnerships with various companies worldwide based on its open platform strategy. Through its certification program Works With SmartThings (WWST), the platform supports more than 390 partner companies and over 4,700 device types globally. By adopting the Matter 1.5 standard fastest, it is bringing 58 Matter-compatible device types into customers' daily lives.
