Two Korean War Military Cemeteries in Iksan Designated as State-Managed Sites

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced Wednesday that two joint cemeteries in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, where fallen soldiers and police officers from the Korean War are buried, have been designated as state-managed memorial sites.

Palbong Military and Police Cemetery, designated as the 18th state-managed memorial site, holds the remains of 157 fallen military personnel and police officers, including those from the Iksan Police Station (formerly Iri Police Station) who died in combat against North Korean forces during operations such as the Geumgang River Defense Operation and the Iri City Defense Operation during the Korean War.

Yeosan Military and Police Cemetery, designated as the 19th state-managed memorial site, holds the remains of 24 fallen military personnel and police officers from the Korean War. A memorial tablet hall within the cemetery enshrines 698 memorial tablets honoring fallen military and police personnel from the Iksan area.

The ministry plans to collaborate with Iksan City to install new signage for the state-managed memorial sites and conduct renovation work on auxiliary facilities including gravestones and memorial towers, as well as overall environmental improvements throughout the cemeteries.
