Samsung AI Energy Mode Cuts Washer Power Use by 30%

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) said Wednesday that its AI energy-saving mode can reduce energy consumption of high-efficiency washing machines by approximately 30%.

The company measured actual energy usage of about 187,000 Samsung high-efficiency washing machines in operation across 126 countries from July last year to June this year, in collaboration with Carbon Trust, a global carbon verification organization.

The results showed that the AI energy-saving mode reduced energy consumption by approximately 5.02 gigawatt-hours (GWh), equivalent to 30% of total energy usage. This amount equals the electricity consumed by 14,000 households in Seoul during one summer month. The AI energy-saving mode is a feature that manages and reduces energy consumption of home appliances connected to SmartThings.

The verification marked an industry first in measuring actual carbon reduction effects from products in use, following the carbon emission and reduction measurement standards of the Decarbonising the Use-phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) consortium. DUCD is a consortium led by Carbon Trust that aims to standardize measurement methods for energy usage and savings of connected devices. Several global IT companies, including Samsung Electronics, participate in the initiative.

Samsung Electronics plans to accurately measure and manage carbon emissions and reductions from home appliance usage to develop more energy-efficient products.
