Gimpo Secures 1.1 Billion Won for AI-Powered Smart Village Project

Gimpo city in Gyeonggi Province announced Wednesday that it has been selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "2026 Community-Based Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support" program, securing a total project budget of 1.1 billion won ($810,000), including 660 million won in central government funding.
The Community-Based Urban Regeneration Smart Technology Support program is a ministry initiative aimed at improving residential environments in urban regeneration areas and addressing local issues through technology-based solutions.
The project site is the "Morae Motungi Village" area around 255-1 Sau-dong, an aging residential district where an urban regeneration New Village project has been underway since last year.
The city plans to focus on addressing residents' most pressing concerns: alleviating parking shortages, ensuring pedestrian safety, and preventing illegal garbage dumping.
Key services to be introduced include smart parking information sharing, an AI-based right-turn safety alert system, smart media poles, multifunctional smart mirrors, and media facades.
Through the project, the city aims to establish an urban regeneration model that integrates cutting-edge technology into the old downtown area and position itself as a leading example of the ministry's smart city policy.
"This selection demonstrates Gimpo's commitment to becoming a future-oriented smart city where all citizens can enjoy safe and convenient lives by utilizing advanced smart technology in the old downtown area," Gimpo Mayor Kim Byung-soo said. "We will actively incorporate residents' opinions to build a successful urban regeneration model that substantially improves quality of life."
