Daum's real-time artificial intelligence (AI) search summary service, "AI Overview," now runs on an AI chip and large language model (LLM) developed by domestic companies. It marks Korea's first commercialized case of full-stack sovereign AI.
Upstage said on the 15th that it has partnered with AXZ, the operator of the Daum portal, and AI chip company FuriosaAI to build a commercialized full-stack sovereign AI case. Under the arrangement, Daum's AI Overview service runs on Upstage's LLM "Solar," which is mounted on FuriosaAI's second-generation neural processing unit (NPU), the Renegade (RNGD). It connects the entire spectrum, from the semiconductor chip to the AI model and the service that users actually experience, using domestic technology.
Lee Kun-soo, CEO of AXZ, explained, "For AI Overview, it is important to provide the latest information based on real-time data, but pre-trained knowledge could cause hallucinations." He added, "We applied harness engineering to the LLM (Solar) so that it answers accurately only within the information I provide, instead of the knowledge it has learned so far, ensuring it provides only the latest information." June Paik, CEO of FuriosaAI, said, "To process AI summaries, we have deployed three nodes and 24 chips, handling 500 million tokens per day." He continued, "We developed everything in-house, including the compiler that maps AI models well onto the accelerator and the engine for optimal serving, achieving performance on par with Nvidia's H200." According to FuriosaAI, adopting the Renegade cuts costs by at least 1.5 times compared with graphics processing units (GPUs).
Upstage and FuriosaAI hope that this collaboration will increase the use of domestic AI models and semiconductor chips. Sung Kim, CEO of Upstage, said, "Using Daum's AI Overview means using Solar and Renegade," adding, "We hope people will use the technology we created a lot." Paik also stressed, "Since the Renegade enables cost savings with performance on par with GPUs, we ask companies to actively consider it when carrying out AI transformation (AX) work."
Lee said, "AI Overview currently accounts for about 20% of the total query volume, and we plan to gradually increase this." He added, "Beyond simple summaries, we are expanding into verticals such as shopping and restaurant searches, and we are also preparing to distribute a user-specialized 'one agent per person' through Daum."
