Daum, the portal absorbed under Upstage, has unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI) summary service, beginning its transformation into an AI portal.
Upstage Company's portal Daum said Monday that it has launched a beta AI summary service based on its own large language model (LLM), Solar. AI Summary is a feature in which the LLM directly analyzes web documents and organizes answers to search results. When a keyword is entered in the search box, it provides a core summary together with supporting evidence, and the AI automatically updates the content when it changes. Upstage, which acquired Daum's operator AXZ from Kakao, last month declared the launch of Upstage Company, encompassing Daum and AI multi-platform company Timely.
This marks the first time Upstage has fully applied AI-related features to Daum since taking over AXZ. Among search engines, there is active movement to incorporate AI into existing services, with Google offering AI Overviews and Naver providing AI Briefing. For Upstage, applying its own AI model to Daum, which has weekly users approaching 10 million, also carries the significance of broadening its user base.
AI Summary is first applied in the beta service to six areas closely tied to daily life: issues, finance, entertainment, health, dictionary, and everyday life. Upstage Company plans to expand the applied fields within the year and distribute a full version. In addition, it will launch an "AI Mode" within the year that completely replaces Daum's integrated search with conversational AI. The plan is to move beyond simple summaries and allow users to explore diverse information in depth by conversing directly with the AI.
"Daum AI Summary is a starting point that shows what changes can be made when AI models meet the daily lives of countless people," said Kim Sung-hoon, CEO of Upstage. "Going forward, we will add Upstage's AI throughout Daum services to open, together, an era in which anyone can naturally enjoy the benefits of AI in daily life."
