
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is expanding its strategic partnership with quantum computing firm QuEra Computing to offer the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer through its cloud environment.
AWS said Tuesday that it will work with QuEra Computing to deliver the fault-tolerant quantum computer "Lyra" via the cloud on Amazon Braket in 2028. Amazon Braket is an AWS cloud service that provides access to a variety of quantum computing hardware, launched in 2020.
A fault-tolerant quantum computer refers to technology that actively detects and corrects quantum computation errors to perform large-scale calculations. Quantum computers have faced limitations because qubits, the smallest unit of information used in quantum computers, react sensitively even to minute external changes, making them prone to errors. Fault-tolerant quantum computing is regarded as a scientifically and industrially important breakthrough because it overcomes this limitation based on error-correction technology.
At the core of the partnership between AWS and QuEra Computing is Lyra, a Megaquop-scale quantum device. Lyra can perform more than one million quantum operations based on hundreds of logical qubits. Once Lyra is introduced on Amazon Braket in 2028, researchers and companies worldwide will be able to access fault-tolerant quantum computing through the cloud without building separate hardware.
Application areas that Lyra could enable include quantum chemistry, which handles complex molecular structures; high-energy physics, which requires modeling interactions between particles; and materials simulation, where predicting and optimizing the properties of new materials is key. All of these are areas that are difficult or impossible to solve with sufficient accuracy using existing computers.
Mikhail Lukin, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of QuEra Computing, said, "We are proud to significantly expand our collaboration with AWS to bring Lyra's capabilities to a broader community of scientific users." He added, "This system, designed to enable quantum computation at an unprecedented scale, will contribute to research in differentiated application areas."
Meanwhile, Amazon Braket currently supports major quantum computing frameworks such as Qiskit, PennyLane, Bloqade, and CUDA-Q, enabling integration with various research environments. Existing Amazon Braket users will be able to access fault-tolerant quantum computing directly in their familiar development environment after Lyra is introduced.
