AI LINK, the artificial intelligence journalism ecosystem built by Seoul Economic Daily, was selected as the "world's best AI news product," beating The New York Times (NYT). It is the first time a Korean news outlet has reached the top of the global digital journalism field.
The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) held the Global Digital Media Awards (DMA) ceremony Monday at the Palais du Pharo in Marseille, France, during the 77th World News Media Congress (WNMC), naming AI LINK first place in the "Best AI-Driven News Product, Format, or Strategy" category.
This year's DMA, which featured competition across 12 categories, drew 811 entries from 78 countries, judged by 61 jurors. Of these, 50 that advanced through regional finals reached the global finals. Seoul Economic Daily competed against four organizations in the AI category, including NYT, considered the world's most authoritative newspaper.
AI LINK is an AI ecosystem that combines "AI NOVA," which helps reporters write articles; "AI PRISM," which curates news tailored to readers; "AI WAVE," which converts text articles into video; and "AI GLOBE," which translates Korean articles into English. Under the motto "Let News Flow," it uses AI to connect reporters with articles, readers, video and global audiences.
Seoul Economic Daily's "AI PRISM" won a gold award in the Asia regional newsletter category and advanced to the global finalists. It competed against the Financial Times (FT) from three countries, but the United Kingdom's FT "The AI Shift" ultimately took first place. It was the first time FT had reached the DMA global top spot.
Meanwhile, AI LINK started in 2024 as a digital media service development support project of the Korea Press Foundation, and was built on the AWS cloud with support from Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Media Jump Start program.
