LG CNS has won and formally launched the Korea Electric Power Corp.'s (KEPCO) consulting project for an Information Strategy Plan (ISP) to build a next-generation sales and distribution system, the company said Tuesday. The project is a preliminary initiative that will determine the mid- to long-term execution strategy and technology roadmap for the main construction project, which is expected to be worth hundreds of billions of won. It is a core project that will draw up the blueprint for the next-generation system.
The sales and distribution system consists of a sales division, which handles the entire customer service process including electricity bill calculation, billing, and collection for approximately 25 million customers, and a distribution division, which manages power facility operations such as distribution design and construction management. It is a key business system used in real time by more than 22,000 KEPCO employees. LG CNS was selected as the ISP partner based on its capabilities in executing large-scale next-generation projects across various industries including public, telecommunications, and finance, as well as its expertise in establishing more than 100 ISPs over the past three years.
Through this project, LG CNS will comprehensively reorganize the operational framework of the sales and distribution system and design an intelligent business system based on artificial intelligence (AI) and data. For example, in the work of checking customer electricity usage and billing and collecting fees, the power measurement equipment used at each site varies and the formats of collected data also differ. The process of verifying usage also involves significant manual work. LG CNS will derive ways to apply an automation platform that reduces manual and repetitive tasks, and identify business areas where AI can be highly effective to propose actual implementation plans. For instance, it will apply AI-based analytical models to verify customer electricity usage and billing information, enabling rapid detection of abnormal billing or unusual usage patterns.
"Amid an increasingly complex power environment, KEPCO's top priority is thoroughly 'customer-centered service,'" said Baek Woo-ki, Executive Vice President and Head of KEPCO's Sales Division. "Through this next-generation system construction, we will dramatically improve the quality of public services and fulfill our role as a key resource leading the power business ecosystem." Lee Ho-gun, Executive in charge of Public, Telecommunications, and Education AX Business at LG CNS, said, "This ISP project is the starting point for transforming KEPCO's core business system into an intelligent framework based on AI and data. We will present the optimal strategy and execution plan so that it can successfully lead to the main construction project."
