Pharmaceutical and biotech companies have recently held annual general meetings and board sessions to replace their chief executives en masse. The moves are interpreted as efforts to strengthen professional management systems and accelerate global business expansion.

According to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry on Saturday, companies including Myungin Pharmaceutical, Kolon Life Science, AriBio and Macrogen appointed new CEOs at this year's shareholder meetings and board sessions.

A wave of new CEO appointments aimed at transitioning to professional management systems came first. Myungin Pharmaceutical appointed Lee Kwan-soon and Cha Bong-kwon as co-CEOs in line with its previously announced strategy to shift to a professional management structure. Lee, the newly appointed co-CEO, previously served as CEO of Hanmi Pharmaceutical, where he led new drug technology licensing deals. Cha joined the company as part of its first class of openly recruited employees and has been overseeing domestic sales and organizational operations. Earlier, Hanmi Pharmaceutical appointed Hwang Sang-yeon, former head of the private equity division at HB Investment, as its CEO — the first outside executive to lead the company in its 53-year history.

Appointments aimed at expanding global reach followed. Macrogen, a genomic analysis company, named Executive Vice President Lee Eung-ryong as its new CEO, shifting from a two-representative system to a three-co-CEO structure. "This reorganization is a strategic decision to ramp up our push into global markets and translate our genomic analysis technology into actual revenue and global contracts," a company official said. Kolon Life Science appointed Executive Vice President Lee Han-kook as its new CEO. Given that Lee previously led overseas regulatory approvals, international business operations and the establishment of overseas research hubs at Daewoong Pharmaceutical, the appointment is seen as an effort to organically connect regulatory strategy execution with development, manufacturing, approval and commercialization in global markets. AriBio also appointed Vice Chairman Sung Soo-hyun as its new co-CEO, forming a co-CEO structure alongside existing CEO Jung Jae-jun. As Sung served as CEO from 2010 to 2019, the appointment is interpreted as an effort to further accelerate the completion of the global Phase 3 clinical trial for AR1001, an oral Alzheimer's treatment.
