
As corporate artificial intelligence competition shifts beyond simple technology development to focus on "boosting productivity through AI," the race to recruit AI transformation (AX) talent is intensifying.

Krafton (259960.KS), the most aggressive adopter of AI among Korean game companies, has launched an experiment to find AX developers with a bold condition: "No academic background or career experience required." With the growing importance of hands-on, communicative talent who can identify problems on the ground and solve them with AI, such unconventional hiring practices are expected to become more common.
According to the information technology industry on the 26th, Krafton began dedicated hiring for AI FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer) positions the previous day. FDEs, also called "field-deployed engineers," are engineers primarily dispatched to non-development teams within a company to support operational AX. This is the first time Krafton has recruited FDEs since establishing its deep learning division in 2022 and declaring an "AI First" strategy last year as part of its transformation into an AI company.
"As various AI tools began to be used across the entire company, the need to improve work efficiency through AI also grew," a Krafton official said, explaining the background of the hiring. FDEs will work alongside employees in each of Krafton's divisions to identify tasks that can be automated with AI and develop solutions. The hiring target is in the double digits.
What stands out are the requirements Krafton has set. At the very top of the job posting, Krafton emphasized that "candidates will be selected based on competency regardless of academic background and career experience." This means even high school graduates without a separate degree can be hired if they can demonstrate the ability to solve industrial problems using AI. Krafton has always classified academic background as an optional field on resumes, but it has reportedly never conducted a dedicated hiring drive for developers explicitly promoting no-degree and no-experience requirements like this. Notably, Krafton plans to administer a job skills test to all applicants to stay true to the spirit of this hiring initiative.
However, this is a "pilot hiring" of an experimental nature. FDEs will work on three-month contracts, with extensions determined based on performance. Krafton plans to pay FDEs a monthly salary and performance bonus exceeding the starting salary for college-graduate developers.
Krafton's experiment in AX aligns with a broader trend both domestically and globally in which "AI-native" developers are gaining prominence. With the emergence of coding agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, development has become accessible to anyone. The ability to apply AI to real-world business problems is now more highly valued. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly expressed the view that AI proficiency will become more important than degrees, saying, "My children will probably not go to college."
Companies share this perspective. According to a survey on AI talent demand published this month by the Korean Standards Association, companies ranked "hands-on project and field application experience (32.9%)" as the top priority competency for AI talent. "Communication, attitude, and collaboration skills (28.0%)" followed in second place.
Meanwhile, as AI adoption expands across industries, compensation for AI and data-related positions is rising rapidly. An analysis by Wanted Lab based on 258,146 user data points showed that AI and data development positions command higher average salaries than other fields such as management and marketing. While management and business positions offer the highest starting salary at approximately 33 million won, development positions see the steepest salary growth from the third year onward, reversing the ranking.
Within development positions, salary gaps are also widening depending on the nature of the role. Machine learning engineers who develop AI models and data engineers who manage data infrastructure recorded annual salaries in the 70 million to 80 million won range at the 12-year mark, while front-end engineers and web publishers earned only 50 million to 60 million won. Technical capabilities aligned with AI advancement are serving as a key factor in determining salary levels even within development roles.
"As talent evaluation criteria change, the need for AI proficiency is growing not only in development but also in management and marketing roles," an industry official said. "Going forward, the ability to understand and utilize AI technology will become an increasingly important competitive advantage."
