Naver will restrict comments on political and election news articles and strengthen its AI moderation system during the local election period.
The company announced on the 19th that it will not display comments below articles in the politics and election sections until June 3, when the 9th nationwide local elections conclude. Naver also launched a dedicated local election section.
The comment collection area will only offer sorting by most recent. Verified accounts will remain limited to three comments per article, as before.
Naver plans to introduce a system in April that automatically closes comments on articles with high rates of abusive comments blocked by CleanBot. The AI-based malicious comment detection system, first introduced in the industry in 2019, continues to enhance its learning on hate speech, derogatory language, and discriminatory expressions, in addition to profanity, sexual content, and violent language.
The company is considering expanding the automatic comment closure system to all news sections beyond politics and elections when blocked comments exceed a certain threshold.
"Naver will continue its technical and institutional efforts to foster comments as a space for healthy communication," said Kim Soo-hyang, a Naver leader. "We will provide a more trustworthy news environment and advance our services."
