The Korean government has selected 30 key initiatives to transform public services such as weather forecasting through artificial intelligence.
The government announced Wednesday that it discussed the "30 Key Initiatives for Realizing an AI Democratic Government" at the second Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting, aiming to provide AI services that citizens can experience firsthand and to innovate administrative processes.
The 30 key initiatives will be selected by conducting priority assessments based on representativeness, tangibility and readiness among candidate projects derived from demand surveys of central administrative agencies. The initiatives will be categorized into public service innovation, government efficiency improvement and disaster safety.
Examples of major initiatives include "AI National Secretary" and "AI-based Tax Service Innovation" for building a citizen-friendly government that prioritizes people's rights. For a competent government meeting public expectations, the initiatives include "AI-based Weather and Climate Prediction System" and "AI Patent Analysis and Examination." For a government prioritizing public safety, the initiatives include "AI Wildfire and Haze Prediction" and "AI-based CCTV Monitoring."
The government also plans to strengthen AI education for job seekers and employees through the "Labor Market AI Talent Development Plan." It will operate the "K-Digital Training AI Campus" with capacity for 10,000 people to help entry-level young developers grow. Trainees will receive up to 600,000 won per month to encourage active participation.
For small and medium-sized enterprises and their workers, the government will provide a package supporting the process from discovering SMEs seeking AI training to diagnosing training needs and connecting them with customized training programs. It will train "vocational training consultants" to advise SMEs on their training situations and provide free AI remote training to 100,000 workers. The program also offers company-customized training course development and problem-solving training.
For middle-aged workers and others preparing for career transitions, the government will provide basic AI utilization education and specialized AX training through Korea Polytechnics, a public vocational education institution. It will also newly support job transition training utilizing AI centered on regional areas.
The government will establish four "Physical AI Training Labs" and 20 "AI-Specialized Joint Training Centers" in regions lacking AI training infrastructure. It plans to systematically train instructors through the "AI Instructor Academy Program."
