Director of Disease Control Lim Seung-kwan said that influenza (flu), which has been prevalent since October of this year, is still on the rise, and encouraged them to actively participate in vaccination even now.
On the 2nd, Chairman Lim participated in the flu vaccination at a health center in Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, and stated, “No matter what influenza virus spreads, the most effective method is vaccination.”
According to the Agency for Disease Control, in the 47th week of this year (November 16-22), the number of influenza doctors' patients reached 70.9 per 1000 people. The number of influenza doctor patients increased for 5 consecutive weeks, following 13.6 at 43 weeks, 22.8 at 44 weeks, 50.7 at 45 weeks, and 66.3 at 46 weeks.
Director Lim said, “Recently, the increase in the influenza A type H3N2 virus epidemic has slowed slightly,” and “However, if other subtypes such as H1N1 and type B occur, the pattern and scale of the epidemic may change, so we are closely monitoring the epidemic and responding jointly with relevant departments.” He explained, “Although some variants have been confirmed in H3N2, the influenza virus circulating at home and abroad, the vaccine currently being given is still being evaluated to be effective.”
According to the Agency for Disease Control, the flu vaccination rate for the elderly aged 65 and over is 78.3%, and 63.6% for children, which is higher than last season.
Commissioner Lim emphasized that “the influenza vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization, severity, and death due to the influenza virus,” and “we urge high-risk groups who have not yet been vaccinated to get vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
