"Fisherman golfer" Choi Ho-sung has claimed his 10th career victory, winning the 14th Grand CC Cup KPGA Senior Open (total purse 150 million won) on the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) Champions Tour.
Choi carded a 3-under-par in the final second round held at the South-West Course (par 72) of Grand CC in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on the 15th, finishing at 8-under-par 136 to edge the runner-up group, including Kang Ji-man and Seok Jong-yul (both 7-under-par), by one stroke to lift the trophy. The winner's prize was 24 million won.
"Whenever I win, I feel so happy and overwhelmed," Choi said. "The weather was better than expected today, so I thought I'd need to shave off at least four strokes to win, but I won even after cutting only three. I'm so grateful." He added, "I really struggled with an elbow injury over the past two years. Now that I've almost recovered, I was able to play with a bit more confidence, which led to good performance." He smiled and said, "My wife, who always instills a positive mindset in me and has been my biggest supporter, is the driving force behind this win."
Choi, who debuted on the KPGA Tour in 2004, recorded two wins at home and three abroad during his active career. On the Champions Tour after turning 50, he has notched three wins in Korea and two in Japan.
"I want to express my gratitude to all involved, including Geumgang Housing Chairman Kim Chung-jae and Vice Chairman Kim Tae-woo, who continue to support me even in a difficult economic climate," Choi said. "Although I've reached 10 wins, I will always stay humble and show my best effort at every tournament."
