Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland will go head-to-head with Chris Gotterup of the United States, who has been riding a hot streak, at the PGA Tour's Genesis Scottish Open (total purse of $9 million). The two also clashed in the final round of last year's tournament.
The Genesis Scottish Open will be played over four days starting July 9 at the Renaissance Club (par 70) in North Berwick, Scotland. Co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, the event serves as the final tune-up before The Open, the season's last major.
According to the pairings announced by the tournament organizing committee on July 9, McIlroy will play the first round alongside Gotterup and Robert MacIntyre of Scotland. The grouping brings together the champions of the past three years: McIlroy won the event in 2023, MacIntyre in 2024 and Gotterup in 2025.
Fans are especially focused on the showdown between McIlroy and Gotterup. Little known at the time of last year's tournament, Gotterup faced McIlroy head-to-head in the final pairing of the final round and won by two strokes. Riding the momentum from that victory, Gotterup went on to win the Sony Open and the Phoenix Open this year, then added the John Deere Classic last week. He is currently ranked No. 7 in the world.
McIlroy captured his second consecutive Masters title this year. He has also shown sharp form at the Genesis Scottish Open, winning in 2023 and tying for fourth in 2024.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the United States is determined to restore his pride. Scheffler won the season-opening American Express but has recorded four runner-up finishes since.
Korean players in the field include Si Woo Kim, Sungjae Im, Tom Kim (Kim Joo-hyung), Lee Jeong-hwan, Choi Seung-bin, Kim Baek-jun and Ok Tae-hoon. Si Woo Kim skipped last week's John Deere Classic to prepare for two consecutive weeks of tournaments in Scotland.
