Changwon, a city in South Gyeongsang Province, has built a park golf course dedicated to people with disabilities in Jangcheon-dong, Jinhae-gu, the city said Monday.
The project was pursued to respond to the recently growing demand for park golf and to expand opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in community sports. The city invested a total of 470 million won and began construction in January this year, completing the project in about six months.
The course was built with nine holes on a total area of 4,878 square meters (approximately 1,476 pyeong). It was designed with the accessibility and mobility convenience of people with disabilities in mind, and is equipped with convenience and safety facilities including a parking lot (15 spaces), restrooms, a management office, a storage room and a boundary fence. Access road improvement work is currently under way, and the course is scheduled to officially open in September.
The project is the first achievement of "Building 500 Park Golf Holes," a key pledge of the eighth popularly elected local government of Changwon. The city currently operates 11 courses (246 holes) and plans to build seven more courses (121 holes) in the future.
Kang Ki-yoon, mayor of Changwon Special City, said, "I hope the Jangcheon-dong park golf course for people with disabilities will become a community sports space that both people with disabilities and citizens can enjoy together." He added, "We will push forward without setbacks on our pledge to build the nation's largest park golf course."
