The Round of 16 match between Mexico and England at the 2026 North American World Cup was pushed back one hour from its scheduled start due to bad weather.
FIFA said the Round of 16 match between Mexico and England, held at Mexico City Stadium, would begin at 10 a.m. Korean time Saturday, one hour later than scheduled.
The match had originally been set to kick off at 9 a.m. Korean time (6 p.m. local time), but the start was delayed after a storm accompanied by thunder and lightning developed near the stadium.
In line with FIFA guidelines, spectators and officials were evacuated indoors.
With the storm already forecast, FIFA had considered moving the day's kickoff up to noon local time, but ultimately decided to keep the existing schedule.
Earlier in the tournament, the Group I second-round match between France and Iraq (France won 3-0) at Philadelphia Stadium in Pennsylvania on Nov. 23 was disrupted by bad weather.
At the time, after France led 1-0 at halftime, the match resumed following a delay of two hours and 10 minutes, including the 15-minute halftime, due to bad weather.
The Round of 32 match between Mexico and Ecuador at Mexico City Stadium on Dec. 1 also started one hour later than scheduled due to bad weather and the risk of lightning strikes near the stadium.
