Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association (KFA), has submitted his resignation.
Chung announced he would step down as president after holding a final executive meeting Friday morning at the Korea Football Park in Cheonan, attended by vice presidents and board members.
Chung, who was elected the 52nd president of the KFA on Jan. 28, 2013, and served four terms, is stepping down as head of Korean football after about 13 years and five months.
Chung had initially been expected to resign after the closing of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in North and Central America.
However, he reportedly judged it better to move up the timing of his departure to quickly resolve the turmoil surrounding the association and normalize the organization.
Chung delivered his farewell message through the association as he stepped down that day. "I bow my head in gratitude for all the warm love and criticism you have shown toward Korean football," Chung said. "All the glory and achievements are thanks to the players and fans, and all the shortcomings and mistakes are entirely my responsibility."
He continued, "Now I will step down from the presidency and return as one passionate football fan to cheer on Korean football. As it always has, Korean football will overcome countless trials and once again soar high, I am certain."
Under Article 23 of its charter, the association will appoint one of its vice presidents as acting president and then receive confirmation from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.
