Spain, "La Roja," routed Austria behind a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad).
Spain won 3-0 in their round-of-32 match against Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America, held Wednesday (Korea time) at LA Stadium in the United States.
Spain, who had advanced as group winners with two wins and one draw, five goals scored and none conceded, continued their clean-sheet record in the knockout stage, scoring three goals without giving up a single one.
With the win, Spain claimed their first World Cup knockout victory in 16 years, since the 2010 South Africa tournament. Spain were eliminated in the group stage at the 2014 Brazil tournament, and in the two most recent World Cups they both stopped in the round of 16.
Spain will take on the winner of Portugal and Spain in a bid for the quarterfinals.
Austria, on the other hand, failed to record a single shot on target and were completely overwhelmed by Spain's momentum before being eliminated.
Spain dominated the flow from the early stages of the match, pushing Austria back. The opening goal also belonged to Spain. In the 36th minute of the first half, Oyarzabal shook the net with a shot that deftly changed the direction of a low cross that came in from the left flank.
Having ended the first half 1-0, Spain continued their offensive in the second half and extended the gap with an additional goal. In the 66th minute, Pedro Porro (Tottenham Hotspur) headed in a cross that came up from the side of the penalty area to widen the score to 2-0.
In the 89th minute, Oyarzabal added another goal. He received a cross that came in from the flank and put it away to go ahead 3-0.
Austria continued to attack afterward using their aerial presence, but could not open Spain's goal.
Oyarzabal, with his third and fourth goals of the tournament, closed in on the scoring leaders' mark held by Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Kylian Mbappe (France), who each have six goals.
