Julian Nagelsmann, head coach of Germany, declared that he has no intention of resigning after his team was eliminated by Paraguay in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Germany failed to advance to the Round of 16 after losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay, following a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of grueling extra time, in the Round of 32 match held at Boston Stadium in Massachusetts on Monday.
Germany, the 2014 World Cup champions in Brazil, had aimed for a title 12 years later in this tournament, but left disappointment behind after being eliminated in the Round of 32.
In particular, Germany had sought to restore its bruised pride after being knocked out in the group stage in two consecutive tournaments — the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — but slipped in its first knockout match, leaving a humble record.
After the match, Nagelsmann said in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, "I'm not someone who runs away," making clear that he would not resign.
"I want to continue in the coaching role, but I cannot always decide everything myself," he stressed. "If the German Football Association wants me, I will prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League."
He added, "I will not resign. If the German Football Association doesn't want me, then I will leave."
