The KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the third major of the women's golf season, will be held over four days starting Wednesday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. The tournament features a total purse of $13 million (about 20 billion won), with a winner's prize of $1.95 million (about 3 billion won). It is the largest purse in women's golf history.
Drawing as much attention as the prize money is whether world No. 1 Nelly Korda of the United States can win her third consecutive major. Korda won the Chevron Championship this season, followed by the U.S. Women's Open. She previously won this tournament in 2021. If Korda claims the title this time, it would mark her fifth major victory and 20th career win on the LPGA Tour. Korda would also accumulate all 27 points needed for induction into the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Among the Korean players competing are Kim Hyo-joo and Kim Se-young, along with Jeon In-ji, Yoo Hae-ran, Choi Hye-jin, Lee So-mi, Hwang Yu-min and Kim A-rim. Kim Hyo-joo, who won two titles on the LPGA Tour this season, prepared for this tournament after competing in the team event Dow Championship and then taking a one-week rest.
Kim Se-young won this tournament in 2020, and Jeon In-ji was champion in 2022. Jeon struggled for some time but has been on the rise recently, finishing fourth at the U.S. Women's Open and tied for 12th at last week's Meijer LPGA Classic.
Hazeltine National Golf Club, where the tournament is being held, is a familiar venue to Korean golf fans. It is the course where Yang Yong-eun defeated "golf emperor" Tiger Woods of the United States to win the PGA Championship, a men's golf major, in 2009.
