Through 44 matches as of Monday, Korea time, a total of 134 goals have been scored at this World Cup. That works out to 3.04 goals per match. At the same point in the 2022 Qatar tournament, 97 goals had been scored after 44 matches, marking an increase of nearly 25%.
The Associated Press analyzed that the official match ball Trionda is behind the high scoring at this tournament. The Trionda uses deep seams to reduce wobble as the ball flies, and it has enhanced surface grip so the ball connects well with the foot even in rainy or high-humidity conditions. The International Football Federation (FIFA) explains that the ball was made to allow players to shoot and dribble more reliably. Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick told the AP, "The ball flies as fast as a cannonball," adding, "A cleanly struck shot is extremely difficult for a goalkeeper to stop."
In addition, the introduction of hydration breaks, which has extended stoppage time, and the wider talent gaps between teams as participating nations increased under the 48-country format are also cited as causes of the goal bonanza.
By league, players from the English Premier League (EPL) recorded the most goals with 28. They were followed by Germany's Bundesliga (16 goals), Spain's La Liga (11 goals), France's Ligue 1 (7 goals), and Italy's Serie A (6 goals).
