According to FIFA on Sunday, referee Tello will blow the whistle for the Group A finale between Korea and South Africa at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Tello, who began his refereeing career in 2013, has served as a FIFA international referee since 2019. According to football statistics site Player Stats, he has officiated a total of 395 matches, issuing 1,814 yellow cards and 80 red cards. That works out to 4.59 cautions and 0.2 ejections per match.
An Argentine, Tello is said to be lenient toward physical play, operating in a way that keeps the flow of the game intact as much as possible. However, he also has a tendency to pull out cards without hesitation to control the match at necessary moments.
He made his name in the 2022 Trofeo de Campeones final between Boca Juniors and Racing Club in Argentina. At that match, he sent off as many as 10 players when the two teams broke into a brawl.
Serving as a World Cup referee for the second time after the 2022 Qatar tournament, Tello officiated the Group B opener between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on the 13th in this tournament. In that match, he showed five yellow cards to the two teams.
