Victor Wembanyama, the NBA's next-generation superstar of the San Antonio Spurs, has come under scrutiny for declining to speak with reporters after a game.
According to ESPN on Wednesday (Korea time), the NBA league office notified Wembanyama that he had violated media access rules by not responding to reporters' questions. After San Antonio's 114-127 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the Western Conference playoff finals on Tuesday, Wembanyama informed reporters through a team spokesperson that he would not be taking interviews.
The NBA mandates that players participate in media interviews following playoff games. Players who have refused interviews have been fined in the past. In 2023, Jimmy Butler and Dillon Brooks were each fined $25,000 (approximately 37 million won) for violating media access rules.
In Tuesday's game, Wembanyama shot just 26.7 percent from the field. He also pulled down only six rebounds, falling short of expectations. Trailing 2-3 in the best-of-seven series and facing elimination, San Antonio will look to fight back in Game 6 on Thursday at its home arena, the Frost Bank Center.
