World No. 2 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland will compete in the PGA Championship, the season's second major tournament, after overcoming an unexpected toe injury.
According to AP and AFP on Wednesday (Korea time), McIlroy completed his scheduled practice round at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, the tournament venue, wrapping up his preparations for the event.
After the Truist Championship last week, McIlroy said he had developed a blister on his right pinky toe and had removed the toenail himself to treat it. During a practice round on Tuesday, he felt pain in his toe, limped through only three holes, and headed to the clubhouse.
McIlroy quickly found a solution. He prepared several pairs of shoes in different sizes to reduce pressure on his right foot and completed his second practice round without issue a day later. "I put on shoes that are half a size bigger and added cushioning around my pinky toe," he said. "I can walk without discomfort, and there's no reason I can't play."
McIlroy, who donned the green jacket at the Masters Tournament last month in the season's first major, will play alongside Jordan Spieth of the United States and Jon Rahm of Spain in the first and second rounds of this tournament.
