Phil Mickelson, a six-time major champion, will not compete in this season's second major tournament, the PGA Championship.
According to Reuters, the Associated Press and other local media outlets on Tuesday (Korea time), Mickelson notified the PGA Championship organizing committee of his withdrawal from the tournament due to family health issues. Ahead of the Masters, the season's first major tournament last month, he had announced he would take an extended break because of family matters. With Mickelson's absence, the spot goes to Max Homa.
Mickelson's most recent major victory came at the 2021 PGA Championship. He lifted the trophy at 50 years and 11 months old, becoming the oldest major champion in history. Tiger Woods, who declared a break from competition after being arrested on drug-related driving charges in March, will also skip the tournament.
Dustin Johnson's eligibility expired at the end of last year, but he received a special invitation to play. Johnson has captured two major titles, winning the 2016 U.S. Open and the 2020 Masters. He currently competes on the LIV Golf circuit.
This year's PGA Championship will be held from May 14 to 17 local time at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. The two winners of this week's Truist Championship and Myrtle Beach Classic will also earn spots in the tournament.
