Tottenham Hotspur, locked in a fierce relegation battle in the English Premier League (EPL), has been dealt a major blow. Forward Xavi Simons of the Netherlands has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.
The club announced on its official website on the 27th (local time) that "Simons has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," adding that "Simons, who injured his knee in the second half of last weekend's match against Wolverhampton, will undergo surgery within the next few weeks."
Simons also expressed his disappointment on his social media, saying, "People say life can be cruel, and today it really feels that way. My season has ended abruptly. I am heartbroken. Representing my country this summer is also gone. Please wait for me."
Simons sustained the injury in the 58th minute of Tottenham's away match against Wolverhampton in the 34th round of the 2025-2026 EPL season on the 26th, when he fell during a physical challenge with an opposing defender.
Diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and requiring surgery, Simons has been ruled out for the rest of the season and will also find it difficult to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, which kicks off in June.
Tottenham sits in 18th place in the relegation zone with eight wins, 10 draws and 16 losses for 34 points, still two points behind 17th-placed West Ham, who have 36 points.
