The head of the Norwegian Football Association has urged FIFA to abolish the "FIFA Peace Prize."
According to Reuters on Thursday (local time), Lise Klaveness, 45, president of the Norwegian Football Association, argued that the FIFA Peace Prize should be abolished to avoid entanglement with politics.
"We want the FIFA Peace Prize to be abolished," Klaveness said in an online press conference. "We do not believe awarding such a prize is FIFA's role."
The FIFA Peace Prize has drawn major controversy since U.S. President Donald Trump received it in December 2025. Reuters commented that the prize, handed to Trump at the draw ceremony for the 2026 World Cup in North America, "was seen by many as a consolation prize for Trump, who has repeatedly argued that he should receive the Nobel Peace Prize."
"It is important that football associations, continental confederations and FIFA maintain a certain distance from national leaders," Klaveness stressed. "Awarding such prizes without sufficient framework and experience can often become highly political."
She also said the Norwegian Football Association's board would send a letter supporting a call for an investigation by the non-profit organization FairSquare.
FairSquare has been vocal in raising concerns that FIFA President Gianni Infantino and FIFA may have violated their own ethical guidelines on political neutrality in the process of awarding the Peace Prize.
